Smallholder Dairy Farmers
In Sri Lanka 96% of the dairy farmers are small holders, it is their livelihood. On our journey to uplift communities, we partner with an increasing number of smallholder dairy farmers constantly investing in their livelihoods, helping address different challenges and providing them with the means to grow and flourish. At present, our supply chain is integrated with 4,760 smallholder dairy farmers. We are working towards expanding this network to empower 7,500 smallholder dairy farmers and 10,000 rural youth.
We take a holistic approach to enable farmers to do better. We do not only work on how much and what they produce, but also on the processes and other aspects of their lives. Our key areas of focus include:
- Developing and promoting modern techniques in dairy farming
- Introducing young farmer programmes including education and training in profitable integrated farming systems, farm planning, better farming with best practices, marketing, finance management, business plans and the introduction of new technology
- Increasing awareness and usage of technology, supply chain management and establishing methods for direct marketing
- Promoting and developing organic farms
- Facilitating technical, skills and management training
- Establishing, mobilizing and networking with Farmer Organisations
- Ensuring food security to households protecting the environment
- Empowering dry zone farmers to meet the needs of the future dairy industry and help Sri Lanka achieve self-sufficiency in milk production
